odometer repair

Finally got around to looking at my odometer. Looks like someone has attempted the fix it previously. The little gear has now cracked and the teeth are gone. So much for the simple fix Anybody got a source for the gears? Did a quick search and so far all the repair shops will not sell the gears only the complete repair.

Ken,
I tried to fix my odometer on my 87 300E also. But ended up buying a new one for $370.24 from the dealer.

What year and model is your car? I still have the old odometer if you want to pay for the shipping, you can have it and see if you can savage enough parts to make yours working again. Just an idea.

RE: odometer repair

I have 2 cars with inop odometers, an 87 BMW and an 85 380sl.
In talking with repair shops, the gears get brittle with age. My fat fingers have never been kind to small parts. Thanks for offer for your spare but I think I will go with the new gears.

I got a similiar post on the BMW site about Odometergears.com. Looks just like what I need. The shop is new, sounds like a great asset to the DIY market, need to help get them established. They are a located a couple towns down the interstate from me. I'll report back after I visit.

Odometer Gears Ltd. good place

This post first appeared on the very day my odometer stopped working. (God works in mysterious ways) Visited the www.odometergears.com web site, and intended to pull my instrument cluster to see exactly what i needed. Being too lazy to do that, I called them finally on 2-23, and Jeff offered a guess on the one gear that could vary. Placed the order on Monday, gears arrived Friday. Took the cluster out this morning, figured it out, and got it done. I only needed the 12 tooth drive gear, and did have to bore the center hole out a touch, but all in all a smooth process. By the time i send back the two gears i don't need, i will have a working odo for $30 and an hour of labor. Nice guy, quick service, proper product, i'd recommend them highly.

By the way, this is a job better done before the fourth cup of coffee!!

My 380SE gauge cluster has just started making a sort of speedo cable noise. These cars don't have speedo cables, do they? If not, is it the gears?
