Water Pump 300E
Can anyone advise what is the role of the
two holes in a w124 300E water pump that are at 180 degrees opposite to each other on the main axis. Are these ment to protect the pumps main bearing in case it looses its seal so that it can be drained and can function for extended time period?

They are called "weep holes" and allow you to see when the water pump seal starts to leak. When you see water coming out of those holes it is time to change the water pump.

Actually they should call them "trade holes", cause if you see coolant coming out hang on to your wallet!!
