W129 SL Problem
Hi guys, I have a 96 SL280 and after about 15 minutes of driving it, when I accelerate, the revs climb but the car doesnt move? then when it does, Its like the revs are climbing faster than the car is moving. Also, Say i'm doing 60mph, and come of the Gas completly, the revs just drop.
Can anyone please help me! The car is gorgeous but costing a lot to run! Thanks Shan |

I have some ideas, though I am afraid most are going to lead you to a trip to the dealer. For starters, have you checked the transmission fluid level? And once fifteen minutes elapse, does the problem happen all the time or just intermittently?

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I have checked the Transmission Fluid and it does seem quite low. So I took a trip to the dealer to buy some. I havent put this in yet but will on Saturday. The problem doesnt happen straight away, about 10 mins later it does. It is Intermittent but it happens more so than not happening. The car only has 33K miles on it and is garaged all the time. Any Ideas? |

It does sound quite transmission related. Make sure you're checking transmission fluid after a 10 minute drive and with the engine running.
Following that, probably best to take it to an experienced transmission specialist and see if they'll drive it and say what their feeling of the problem is. good luck Rusty

Low transmission fluid level can explain all of the symptoms you are experiencing, Shan. Other possibilities include a faulty component internal or external to the transmission. Finally, yours is a '96 -- the first year for the electronically-controlled automatic -- and it may not have been retrofitted with updates which were introduced into production in August of '96 which I believe address your issue, among other things.
If correcting the fluid level does not solve your problem, there is nothing you can do on your own, really. Proper diagnosis requires an advanced Mercedes HHT or comparable scanner and knowledge specific to your transmission. Therefore, I would recommend taking the car to a well-equipped Mercedes shop rather than a transmission specialist. Last edited by bobterry99; 02-27-2004 at 12:08 AM. |
