86 190 E strange ignition problem

Dear listers,
I would like to ask you for help. My 86 190E is developing a strange no-start issue. When I turn the key on the lights come up in a normal fashion. However, my first couple of attempts to start the car result in a complete silence. I was SURE that the culprit is the starter (140 original KMi) so it has been replaced with a new unit. The symptoms did not go away, matter of fact they are becoming worse. BTW, my car is begging for a tune-up (140 KMi on every ignition part). What do you think, ignition switch or something else? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Corneliu
P.S. Tune-up coming up in 5 business days. Sorry for abusing a fine automobile.

Wiggle the shifter, or try starting in neutral. If this solves it, the neutral safety switch is bad or needs adjustment.
