S55 Exhaust-----PLEASE HELP
Hello everyone I'm new to this BB and would like to say HI.
I also have a question maybe someone here can help me with. I recently purchased a 2001 S500 sport. I love the look of the exhaust mufflers on the S55. I tried buying after market exhaust tips and went thru the expense of buying them and having them installed only to have them removed within an hour, they looked HORRIBLE. Anyway, I would like to obtain the look of the s55 exahuast, I went to the dealer and he printed me up the diagram and said it could be done but its costly, really costly. Now I've seen AMG exhaust tips for sale on there web site and have inqiured about them (still waiting to see if the will work better than they others I bought). BUt I'am curious, I located an 2001 S55 that has been totaled in a wreck, I spoke with the guy whos owns it and I can purchase the exhaust system from the cat back for a decent price. My concern is will it work? Will I have problems with the car throwing bad codes due to the emmision will it bolt up to my exhaust @ the cat? and last but not least will it fit right coming out the back end and look OK? PLEASE HELP |

i can't imagine you would. it will require a bit of fabrication to install, but as long as the downstream O2 sensors are installed correctly, there shouldn't be a problem. I haven't done this conversion at my shop, but it should be problem free. keep in mind the exhaust on a 55 is a true duel exhaust and the piping diameters/routing are slightly different. inspect the system closely to see how much of a hassle it would be. you may end up just using the mufflers and having an axhaust shop custom bend some piping.

From the look of the diagram I got from the dealer, which shows the stock s500 exhaust and then off to the side it shows the s55 exhaust lay out, it looks like it should bolt up with no problem. However myself not being a mechanic I dont want to spend the cash on something that could turn out not to work for me.
The stock s500 exhaust loks like it is true dual exhaust, but then again I'm having a hard time making heads or tails out if the diagram the dealer gave me. I have another question, I called the dealer and asked them about the AMG exhaust tips, they tell me I cant purchase them alone, but yet the AMG web site says thats where to buy them.Anyone know what the deal with that is???????? |

not sure as to your tip issue, as my dealership does not sell them seperately, but what year is the S55 donor car? the NA motors (pre '03) do have a different exhaust than the Kompressor motors (which is what came to mind as I see way more of those than the NA models). i'm pretty sure a NA S55's cat-back should bolt right up with little or no modification, but check it out. caveat emptor or something to that effect.

The donor car is an 01 s55 which was totaled in an accidentand my car is an 01 s500 sport. I ultimately would like to purchase just the mufflers and have them modified @ a shop. But the place who has the s55 wont just sell me the mufflers, he'll only sell the sysytem from the cat back and although he's selling it for a fraction of the price that the dealer gets for it, its a good buy. He's selling it to me for $800 and the dealer is price for both sides is $2,797 from the cat back.
Heres the link to AMG where I saw the tips for sale, but like I said I'm not even sure if this will work for me, the may only be selling this item fro those who own an s55 as replacement parts. http://www.mercedes-benz.com/omb/amg/en/extras/types/s/daempfer.htm |
