Question 5 speed auto trans 1997 C180 Classic

Have just bought this car and will get it only end March. I was wondering how this trans works as I now have a 4 speed 1994 C180 with me now and it works a bit different to the usual Japanese trans. It starts in 1st, but has a big jerk if I try to step on the acc. a bit too hard when still cold as it changes to 2nd. Later on it changes normally. It doesn't seem to change down by itself going down a slope. The only way to get the car to go faster seems to be to step on the kickdown, very odd because other elect. trans will be able to change itself if you step to certain pressures on the acc. No need for the kickdown. Can I be assured that now with the new 5 speed auto trans, it will do all this on its own and have no more huge knocks when it changes from cold starts?
