I have taken several turbos apart and swapped housings, axles, compressor wheels and turbine rotors among them. No problem.
A turbo is a fairly simple piece of hardware to work on. But it is always recommended to get a pro-shop to balance the rotating parts. -Those things spin REALLY fast and the sligest imbalance will shorten the turbo's life drastically. Plus you really don't want pieces of a wrecked turbo sucked into your engine.
If you insist on doing everything yourself, at least throw in a fresh set of bearings.
