Do you know why the brake lamp wiring harness would have a hanging connector? Is it for cars without ASR or possibly a different brake switch, or even a switch on a manual trans car (since I assume they use the same harness in all 124 body cars worldwide).

I haven't undone the connectors but it appears that the harness goes to a piggyback connector (one two pin connector plugging directly into another two pin connector) on one set of the switch contacts. This piggyback connector has a lead comming off that goes to the other two pin contacts on the brake switch - as well as another lead going to the mistery connector which is also a piggyback connector. This also has a lead that disapperas into a different part of the wiring harness.
