Diagnosis of blower problem
I've been having problems off and on with the blower for the AC/Heater, etc, on my '84 380SE. Today, the temp hit 100, and the blower wasn't working, so I visited my mechanic.
I parked, walked into the office and described the problem. Without moving a muscle, my mechanic said the problem is the switch panel just above the radio. He suggested that I hit the middle divider and see what happens.
I went out, started the car, no blower, and hit the side of the divider with my fist. Guess what. The blower came on.
I walked back in and reported the results. My mechanic smiled and explained that the solder deteriorates over time. He said he could remove it and maybe resolder it, but it would be better to simply replace the unit. He said resoldering it would cost just as much because of the labor involved.
A new unit is on order, and I have an appointment for Thursday morning. He guesses cost will be $250 or so. (Now with my luck, we'll have a cold wave starting Friday.)
So, if you're having trouble with the blower, try giving the divider a good wack. If the blower comes on, you'll know what the problem is.
