Speedometer swap from MPH to KMH
I need to know if I can swap the speedometer cluster in my '89 300se with a unit from a european/canadian car which is in KPH. I believe the potential replacement unit came from the same year and model mercedes.
If the rear axle ratio is the same will this unit work for me? Can I swap my MPH speedo face to the KPH unit and have it read correctly? tks |

You can have a gauge cover made which is listed in kph instead of mph but the odo will be out. This is a quick and easy swap. I see them on ebay all the time.

The need to do just that is what got us into the speedo business in around 1984. We were bringing in grey market cars and were sending the speedos for conversion. Repeated failures from the supplier convinced us to do it ourselves. We too had problems for a while but at least the car didn't have to sit and wait for shipping.
Anyway different faces were put on and the gearing changed to the odometer. This of course is no problem to a speedo rebuilder but the needle must be removed (which is normally done in calabration). This then requires recalibration.
