Talking 86 W124 ACC surgery.....

Removed my dash to replace a couple errent vac pods and gotta question or two about it. After a few hours, choice words and skin damage worthy of a Purple Heart, I had a thought. I had problems after not getting air to the right places with the right switch selection and know the ACC can give strange output with partial failures. I found 1 of 2 footwell pods bad (* I have the earlier version) and 1 of 2 recirc pods bad as well. Question 1 is, what kind of symptoms would the above scenario give? Question 2 is, what would be the problem if I got LOTS of air through the defrost with the system OFF? (The defrost pod was ok) Turning the system ON only slightly reduces the volume of air. BTW I replaced them all and am almost back together, looking forward to a successful ops check! Any thoughts?

What do you mean by system off? With no power to the ACC (key out), the default mode is defrost vents open. You can't get air through the defrost vents with no fan and the car not moving. With power to the ACC unit and the ACC unit set to off (0), the fan should be off and the system should be in recirc mode (no outside air). If you get air in this mode, your recirc actuators are shot, and the air can only come through the defrost vents.

Sixto,
On a w124 from 1988, if the climate control is off (0 knob depressed), am I supposed to get any airflow from the driver's side vent? I thought the answer was no. Thanks

I'm not familiar with the 124 seriesbut typcially there's a trickle of air from the side vents when there's airflow from the defrost vents. It would be strange if you only get air from the side vents. I think the hypothesis that the recirc actuators are shot is worth checking in your case as well.

ChinaClipper,

My 123 is a completely diff system than yours, but perhaps the boys in Germany designed in some similar systems: The trans kickdown switch AND compressor share the same fuse. When the fuse is blown, the system default is full FAN.

Cause of the blown fuse was shorted kickdown switch wire under and between the trans mount.

Check your compressor fuse OR fuses in general, your system default may be similar to the 123 chassis. The only way to turn the FAN off was to turn the entire AC system off, no vent.

Good luck.

You did replace ALL the pods with new while you had the dash out didn't you?
