Talking Shopping for my W124

Ok, I posted about the 94 E320 w/108K miles and 2 warning lights... for $6K, have to look further into that one, it looked immaculate ,but thanks to some feedback here, will have to take a double look at it... just in case of problems .. Not sure, but it might make sense to buy , should it have some problems Kendall Toyota couldn't figure out, and put into it $1-2K ..... Who knows...

also found
95 E320, 120K miles, engine replaced by prior owner (current owner has had it for 2 yrs), had some receipts, but didn't sound like he had "maintainance records". Asking $6K, but said "very motivated".... will take a look at it this evening.

then, this one looks like a jewel. Can anyone decipher what the receipts say via enlarging the image? I think I read somewhere that it had a/c work. I can get this one, 95 E320, 82K miles, for about $9K. Has maintainance records / stamps / receipts. WHAT in the world are those square things on the front doors?? Speakers?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2476332737:)

Of course, all these are subject to PPI, just am not going to PPI each unit I see, LOL

I know, should be an asset, but relatively low mileage cars with replaced motors make me suspicious. How must the car have been treated to have fried the first motor at some point before 120k? Any modern motor is good for far more than that with basic maintenance. Just makes you wonder about the rest of it.

I agree with u 100% .... plus, like I said no maint records... but figured since he was soo "motivated", it might be a gd deal at $4K-$5K... who knows, most likely will pass even looking at it. Not the last one for sale, sellers in Fl seem to sit on these cars for ever to rid themselves of them, no matter how good they are, so its a buyer's market. It was the same two years ago when I got my prior '00 E320.

There is something wrong with the rear bumper on that champagne 320, unless it's the camera...

what about a convertible?

or maybe a V8?

or maybe this really nice diesel?

THat white diesel looks nice ... in your ebay link. Trying to keep it within my state, though.

I decided not to bother seeing the one with the replaced engine, just not worth it. Going to see a BMW tonight,.... did I say that? .... well just going to see it

Still have the two other E320's previously mentioned to think about.

What do you guys think about this one? Doesnt mention maintainance records though . Its local, calling shortly, I think I saw it in the Trader for about $10K.... the one in Sarasots looks better except that weird view of the rear bumper

Are you absolutely sure you want one of these cars? Parts are expensive, they are complicated, and they don't hold up that well. I notice you said.

"w124-Maybe I can drive it more than a week this time without something else breaking."

That's basically been my experience with my w124 too, and I wonder why you would want yet another one. I bought mine to replace my w123 300D, and I've had to keep it because it is so dependable compared to the newer w124. Go figure.

Hijacked someone's quote

Actually, someone else's quote... ... Everyone seems to say, "oh so reliable", but in doing a search in the archives I have come accross some of the same saying, "they suck" more or less in so many words...

Yeah, I am scared to buy one, want one, probably will, but when I read comments like yours, THANK YOU, I get cautious... Last time I was in this boat, I ended up buying a much newer one, but have to go back to an older model now

thanks

Yeah, you will get mixed reviews on pretty much any vehicle.
Really depends upon the perspective of the owner.

You are looking at cars that are 10+ years old. There will be issues. Even if you bought a Toyota, there would be issues.

Sure there will be issues with any car, but I'm saying the complexity and the very high cost of parts on the w124 makes them much more expensive than some other older car. People on this board are a little protective of their Mercedes, so they'll always say MB is better than something else, but hey, I own two myself, and I'm not saying the w124 is total junk, but I will just honestly tell you that if you intend to buy a w124, you better have a pretty good salary.

Case in point: I was quoted $1,000 for a new airpump for my car. A part, mind you, that most other cars don't have, and that only operates for about 1 minute during cold startup. $1,000. I can think of lots of other things I would rather do with $1,000 than sink it into a worthless part. Chew on that.

Shopping for my 124

I think a lot of times if one has a basic knowledge or being mechanically inclined a lot can be saved on these jewels. One of the worst feelings is knowing that you are at the mercy of some possibly dishonest character when dealing with car repairs. That is what is so unique about this forum. People seem if they can to go out of the way to help someone who has issues with their Benz(s). Seems like it is everday that someone new is coming on board and reaping the benefits of the vast amount of knowledge here. As someone said a 10yr old vehicle is a little more apt to have some snafus than some newer models. As for me i am sold on my 124 and each and every day i drive it the more i love it. I am pretty sure that others cars are kept for many years but there is nothing like owning and being part of the Benz family IMHO.

Greg that air pump can also be purchased as a remanufactured unit for about $385.00 from at least 3 sources online. The W124 definitely has some expensive components but for the most part regular maintenance items are much less expensive than modern cars. My wifes 2002 Honda CRV costs nearly 40% more for parts (even online) than my 500E. Regarding reliability I really think it depends on how critical you are when shopping for these cars. In the two years I've owned my car it has been and continues to be extremely reliable. The A/C even blows colder than our new Honda.

Best advice I can give when purchasing a used MB is do not settle for something close to the condition you want. Be patient, spend a little more and buy the best you can.

You must be patient. Look for the best one you can find. There are plenty around. Make sure all the service records are available and all the schelude maintenance has been performed.
With the 94-95 model years the wiring harness and head gaskets were a major concern any owner that cared for there car would have had them replaced by now. If you find a good one you will be driving the safest most relaible car money can buy. Good luck.
happy driving.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. I agree patience... I have one eyed, previously mentioned that has maintainance records and had a $2k a/c job done (I hope its the evaporator!) based on what I can see on the scanned pic on ebay. The other 1-2 for sale locally don't have complete maint records... so we'll see.

Definitely 100% will spend a little more now, vs save now and have to fix later...

HERE , it is a BUYER"S FEAST, for sale Benz's sit on the auto trader for weeks and months with no sales, maybe just Benz's or for sale cars in general down here (since I have seen BMW's sit for sale on the auto trader also, and see the prices lowered after a while, LOL)....

I got cash, so when I see something I do like, I will approach for the kill (contingent on ppi).

I have a reasonable time table to that I should find something, bbut don't have 90-120 days, so looking at bmw also
