Dealer salesman warns of brands of Gas

One of the salesman at the dealer where I purchased my car recently told me NOT to use Petro Canada or Shell. I should use Esso or Sunoco. (my car is an '04 C230 Kompressor Sedan)

Does anybody have any opinions on this? I THINK it is because of how certain brands of gas cause damage to the fuel level sensors due to high sulphur content. There was a big stink recently with the oil companies pointing fingers at the car companies, and vice versa, when people apparently ran out of gas even though the needle showed at least 1/4 full.

I would think that even if the fuel level sensor got messed up, it should be repaired under warranty, as the manual only stipulates what octane to use.
