strange fog light question

Before I call the previous owner of my newly aquired '82 300sd a dufus again (... oh what the heck, I'll call him a dufus again anyway, if not for this, I'm sure I'll find something else later :-) can anybody think why somebody would stuff the inside of the foglight housings with paper towels?

I'm trying to figure out why the foglights don't work. Both of them seem to have some kind of a silvery opaque film onthe inside of the lense. When I pulled the right one I found the bulb wire unplugged. Plugged it in and the bulb works with the light switch, but no light showing through the lense.
Took the bulb out and found the inside of the housing stuffed with a paper towel.
I can't fish the papertowel out with pliers/tweezers etc, so can I cut the seal between the lenseand housing to seperats them and remove the whatever and silicone or? it back together.

Thanks----------Robert

Hi Robert,

maybe he tried to clean the lens from the inside and couldn't get the paper towel out himself just like you now.
Maybe some hose and vacuum? If you use your vacuum cleaner, maybe with a smaller rubber hose attached to it and then snake it into the housing, hoping it will suck it up or at least hold onto it while you remove the hose.

Good luck

Never mind, I figured out why the dufus did it. I pulled the foglight from the left side and found the back of the light housing rusted through ( as in big huge 2"+ holes ) and it looks like the guy painted over the inside of the lenses to cover it up.

Anybody know of a good cheap source for a left ( drivers side ) foglight for this thing?

Thanks--------Robert

You're gonna get a whole bunch of responses now, so let me be the first...

Spring for the Euro lights! You can get original Bosch or Hellas used, or you can get DEPO aftermarkets from www.importvision.com . I'm running DEPOs and am very pleased with them. Give Ken at Import Vision a call.

You might even check with Phil at FastLane first...seems I recall a posting by Partsman Phil that he might have some Euro lights...worth a check.
