A/C Heals Itself?

A/C was checked last year and had 100% charge pressure. I had smelled a funny chemical smell even from within the car several months ago, and the a/c quit working. Mechanic found it had lost 60% of it's charge. Recharged with R134, oil and dye but could not find any leaks. One month later, system runs just fine and continues to have no air bubbles (and no smell). Anyone heard of these healing themselves?

Car is 1994 E320 Wagon with 89,000 miles.

If it were an o-ring or other rubber seal that was leaking, then it is possible that the recharge of freon, oil and dye could've swollen the seals enough to stop the leak, at least for now..
