92 400E engine rebuild

I'm looking at buying a 92 400E with a bad engine since the seller says it's blowing smoke even after warm up.
If I do buy the car, could someone please give me an idea as to how much I would have to spend to completely have the engine re-built. or is there a place where I can buy re-built engine and get it swapped ?
how much labor will be looking at just for the engine swap ?

IF the car looks fixable,

you should really pay for a PPI on the car. Those engines are pretty darn tough and if it's been that abused- I wouldn't touch the car.

Used engines would be the best route, your not dealing with a Chevy 350V8 and parts will $$$. The block is aluminum, so only a machineshop with the proper tools can bore/hone the block($$$).

Go to any webbased parts supplier and look at the cost of timing components, brgs, seals, and new pistons+ rings-

Best advice is to find a better example!

The cost of an engine rebuild will exceed the value of the car. Used M119s in questionable condition go for $4-5000. Get a 5 liter engine if you're going through the trouble

If someone killed the bottom end of a M119, then I would imagine that they have pretty much neglected EVERY inch of the car. I would hesitate to take the car for free, I'd be so afraid of what I might find.

It might be worth a PPI to find out the real problem, and if inexpensive to fix, you might get the car for super cheap using the smoking engine as a bargaining chip, but I would probably take the easier route of just buying a good example and forgetting a broken dog.

I would encourage having it inspected by a reputable repair center to determine the extent of the smoking. Things to consider are

1) Smoking excessively
2) Above with subtle Engine Noise
3) 1 with excessive Engine noise

Items 2 and 3 may dictate a cost prohibitive situation; however, that will be a personal decision.

Item 1 would only discourage me after I had the left side valve cover removed and inspected. Once upon a time there was an occasional problem with a specific freeze plug located on the inside front of that cylinder head. Below the exhaust gear there is a 12mm bore that runs the length of the head. If this plug is missing a smoking exhaust is imminent.

well the car is available here. I guess someone who is more comfortable rebuilding it or might have another engine lying around would take it.

My theory is just the opposite - always a broken Benz - but you have to pay carefull attention to what's broken. I would say don't even consider a broken bottom end of a 119 motor.

I read your post for selling your car just the other day. The only reason I was looking at the other post was because of the ridiculously low price of 3K. That's why I was asking about the rebuilt engine option. otherwise I wasn't looking for another w124
best of luck with your sale. You'll get better replies if yo post pictures of it as well.

Now on Ebay there is a E420 119.985 engine and transmissiom with 55 K on it .bid is 500 with 2 days left and 5 bidders ....... also a 400E engine with 48K for $3995 buy it now.

I sure would have that car looked at by a pro could be something fairly simple or a total money pit. there have been a lot of good cars bought at give away prices because of a small problem.Unless that engine was over heated or run low on oil it sure would have had to have been grossly abused to be smoking at that milage........
