ASR and ABS lights on randomly

I have a 95 wagon and the ASR and ABS warning lights both come on and stay on ocassionally when I start up the car. Maybe every 5th time I start it up. I can shut off the key and restart it and it usually goes away. I know that when the lights are on, those systems are not working. I've had the dealer look into it, but they could not solve it. Any ideas?

TIA - H

Does it ever turn on while driving?

Nope. Just turns on at start up and stays on until I turn off the car, and restart it.

I searched the board and found these as potential causes:

- check fault code indicator readings should help determine where the problem is
- On some cars that's an indication of a low voltage condition caused by a faulty voltage regulator
- brake lamp switch needs to be replaced
- battery or alternator – apparently when the voltage is low, those lights come on
- overvoltage protection regulator
- wheel sensors
- faulty wiring harness

If you've been around this board long enough (i've been around about 5 years), you'll know very well that the over voltage protection relay is a common electrical trouble-maker in the w124 series cars. I'd replace that before you do anything else. $45 for a new one.

Thanks. Hopefully the mystery will be solved tomorrow. I'll report back.

If it was during drives it would point to bad speed sensors.

In this case I second the OVP. There was an update on the OVP. Make sure your car has the new version.
Other than that you might have a problem with the alternator or the ABS/ASR module.
