Sunroof glass removal
In a attempt to correct my problem. I may have to remove the glass. If I remove the 6 torx screws, 3per side, will I have to adjust the glass when I reinstall???. Should I mark the screws first?

Peter,
I think that the spring you describe is actually the sunroof cable. If you see it popping out of the cover, then you've got the same problem as the rest of us. I'm guessing that if you took it to a dealership, the official fix would be to replace the cables and covers. I think that once the cable get pinched, it has a tendency to pop out of the cover. I'm still looking for the video link. It might have been on a MB tech support web site ($). I'll keep digging... In the meantime, here are the steps to remove just the glass panel. Proceed at your own risk! 1. retract the sunroof a few inches. 2. Pop off the black plastic trim on the front edge of the glass on the inside. Be careful! Use a wide screw driver/putty knife/trim tool to pop it off. Don't put it in too far, only about 1/16" becuase there is a metal trim on the glass you don't want to bend. 3. Close the sunroof and then pop it up. 4. Remove the fan-like covers on the side of sunroof. They just pop off to expose the screws. (I see you already have them off in the pictures.) 5. Remove the three torx screws on each side to free the glass panel. When you put it back on, you will need to adjust it. Specs call for it to be 1mm below the roofline in the front and 1mm above the roofline in the back. Take note before you remove it.

I think that the spring I am referring to is the one that pushes up the wind deflector at the very front. It pops up when the glass is slide back.. I believe the spring covers are designed to pop out allowing the spring and cables to relieve some pressure if it gets caught on something or binds while trying to open.. My cover is popping because it binds on that one side. I ordered some of the sunroof grease from the dealership... It was $23.00, I think it is a quart... way too much I will never use it all in a life time....

Hi Benzthere:
Did you find the link? My car is having the same problem, halfway the cables pop out. If I push back while opening it will go all the way back. No problem whatsoever closing. Would replacing those little covers fix the problem? Thanks! |

No I haven't, and it is driving me crazy. I'm pretty sure I got the link from this forum, but I've tried every conceivable search to find it again. I've also tried google to no end. The problem is I have no idea what it was. I don't know if it was content from the WIS CD-ROM, the MB START TekInfo web site (http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/) or something else.
Replacing the covers will only help if you use Ray Nonnie's recommendation to add a second screw. As I mentioned before, I think the official MB solution is to replace the cables and covers.

Thanks!
I looked on startek and nothing there about that. After reading this, I opened the sunroof and tightened the covers, worked perfectly a couple of times but they came loose again and the problem returned. I'll try getting Ray's solution, I'm pretty sure it will work with the 2 screw cover, I have to find out if the MB dealer has that part. |

sunroof parts
Hello, I actually replaced the covers.. I inspected the parts of the sunroof near the front on the sides.. I found cracked and dry pieces.. The parts are cheap from the dealer. I replaced the pieces and lubed them up real good never had a problem after that.. Check really close at all the plastic pieces on both sides...
I believe I have pictures,,, I may post them soon.. Peter

Greetings. great posts! well, I have the same problem with my sun roof on my 97 E300 d it will tilt and lower ok, but it will not open without force. I tore it apart found the one screw covers and the cables hanging out. Also found the white teflon blocks that slide back and forth in the rails worn out. I am assuming that this is causing the drag on the roof when trying to open itI can't find the parts on the web! The Dealers have a monoply on the parts. you can"t buy the teflon replacement blocks or the yellow bushings you must buy the plastic lifting angle guides 2ea. (2107800133) the actuation roof guide 2ea. (2107820231) and angle 2107800112 (left) and Right (2107800212) Maybe someone out there has a suggestion? Also I am told you are not suppose to lubricate the tracks where to teflon blocks glide, just the cable is that true?

Me too
The cables are popping out from under the covers and I have the new ones bought and the roof is out. The Teflon pads look to be in good shape. I see some torn galck fabric material in the grooves it is 1/4" wide. What is it? Where did it come from? Do I need to replace something besides the covers?
