How many ATF quarts...?

Hello all,

It seems like I could crank the engine forever and would never get a chance to line up the torque converter drain plug with the opening hole properly; so I guess I would have to drain the pan & refill more often then. Approximately how many quarts would it need to prepare to do this ?

Alternately, I've heard about turning the engine via the crankshaft but from what I saw, there's no way I could fit a ratchet and a socket in there as the fan is in the way. What am I missing here ?

Any tips are greatly appreciated!
Frank.

It is easy, just work from the bottom. Takes a short extension and a 27mm socket, plus you might have to use a breaker bar rather than a ratchet. The combo will just fit in there.
I have a slim 1/2 ratchet that work great. Remember, the crank bolt is seated deep in the crank pulley you have to seat the socket by feel. The socket and extension go on first, then fit the ratchet or breaker bar last.

If you lay on your back with your head by the right tire you can use your right hand to push the bar up, turning the engine clockwise (in this position you shouldn't be able to get enough umph to push it CCW). Then using your left hand feel carefully for the drain plug on the TC as it rolls over, be careful not to get your fingers caught.

I'm assuming this is the 560, you'll need 8 quarts.

Mike,

Is it safe to assume (from your reply) that I don't need to remove or disconnect anything (spark plugs, belts, ect...) to turn the engine, right ? Do you think 1' breaker bar would do the job ?

Thanks again,
Frank.

You mght disconnect the coil wire or the neg battery terminal just to be safe. I've never had a problem rolling the engine over with the spark plugs in, it just takes a little more oomph. A short 1 foot breaker might be a little tough, I don't know how long my breaker is but it is longer than one foot.

When you have the torque converter drain over the gap in the bellhousing, put/paint a reference mark on the crank pulley so you don't have to go back and forth or risk fiingers the next time.
