240D blow by questions,hard to start when hot

Ok all you diesel gurus. 2 Questions.
1)This 240D I am looking at has some serious blow by. After it is warmed up I removed the vent line on top of the valve cover that goes to the air cleaner housing. I noticed that the blow by smoke was blowing out of thevalve cover to a lenght of 2 feet before dissapating
