I let my window down and tried to let it back up and nothing. I switched around the switches and they all work. When I press the up or down button I hear a little thump from I'm guessing the window motor, but ther is no action or any other sound after that. What does this sound like to you guys? Any tests or actions I can perform to isolate the problem? I'm guessing the worst case scenario is that it's the motor gone bad, correct?

It's probably the plastic piece that slides in the bottom of the window track. One broke in my 300sdl last month. I bought the whole window motor assembly from a junkyard. It turns out, you can buy the plastic piece from fastlane. You have to remove the motor mechanism and grind off the old rivet. Install the new part and pound the rivet down then reinstall the motor assembly. The part is called a window regulator kit.
Take your door panel off and you should be able to tell if that's the failed part. Dave

This happened to my rear window. You will need a new plastic guide which comes with a rivit. The proper procedure is to remove the window motor, grind off the old rivet, the plastic will be broken, and inset the new rivet pounding it with a hammer until it is secure. You talk about a PITA!
Do what I did. I ground off the rivet with a dremel tool. I went to a local hardware store and got a clevis pin, which had many holes for a retaining pin, ie a universal pin. I drilled out the hold in the arm where the rivet fits, cut the new pin to fit. Then I reassembled the plastic guide with the pin, put it back into the track and put the window mechanism arm into the pin. The retaining pin keeps everything together. Don't forget to lube the track and wear gloves, it gets dirty. Unscrew the philips screws in the armrest, behind the plastic cover in the door handlw and watch the wood and seat switches. I can post some pics of the clevis pins when I get home in the morning.

Ok, I've got the door panel off and I have no idea what I'm looking for. This will be the first DIY project with my car, if it's too difficult I will probably take it to the shop

Just fixed both front windows on my 126 300 SD. Look at the bottom track of the glass. At the end of the lift bars you will see the plastic guide. If it is broken you will have to follow the previous instructions. However it could be the motor. They are known to sieze up as in my case. Remove the entire lift mechanism. It is held to the inner skin by bolts which are all visible. You can remove the entire mechanism from the door. When you get it out remove the two hex bolts that hold the motor to the gear mechanism and separate them. There are two rubber plugs on the motor case. Remove and saturate with transmission fluid and manually turn the spiral gear. Hook up the motor to a battery to see if it runs. Reversing the leads reverses the motor. 95% of the time this will free up the motor. Pack the spiral gear with lithium grease and reinstall.
Good luck John The first window took an hour. The second one took 20 minutes.

How to remove a rear door window motor/regulator assembly
I just finished replacing the plastic piece in my 85 380SE rear driver side door window yesterday, following the official MB manual instructions. Not sure if same applies to your car, but if you have removed the door panel, and you need to replace this plastic piece, here's the skinny (from memory, as I'm not near the book or the car) on removal of motor/regulator assembly:
1. Window must be in full, or nearly, down position. 2. Remove the 1 nut and two bolts holding the assembly to the door panel. 3. Loosen top bolt holding left channel to doorskin, remove bottom bolt holding channel to door (channel needs to be swung out of the way to clear assembly) 4. Move assembly to the left and up to let the plastic piece on the end of the arm come out of the channel. 5. Manually raise the glass all the way up and secure with a wedge (body fill applicator works good). 6. Either cut the 2 wires to the motor (not preferred), or pop the cap off the back of the female plug and remove the cylindrical pins. The wires are all numbered to go back in the numbered holes, so don't worry if they all pop out (but pay attention to the motor wires - they're not numbered (but reversing them just makes the 'up' on the switch send the window 'down'. easily fixed, but test first before you replace everything)(none of this is in the book BTW). 7. Manouver the assembly out of the door, exiting through the big opening in the bottom. It's a pain, but it will come out! 8. Follow previous posts for testing motor or replacing plastic guide piece. 9. As they say, replacement is the reverse of removal ![]()
