How to use your multimeter on O2 sensor wire

How do you guys connect to your Oxygen Sensor wire to read the voltage?

I have pin leads on my multimeter and I find it hard to keep the pins in contact while trying to read the voltage, its like doing a juggling act with my fingers while reading the meter.

Do you use a special lead maybe a make shift connector you created?
Please tell me how you do it because that ECU sensor connector under the carpet is well made and is sealed pretty tight when its connected.

Thanks.

If you haven't already, check Steve Brotherton's article on engine control systems in the DIY link at the top of the page. You can check O2 sensor operation with a duty cycle meter through the diagnostic port. Reading the voltage directly off the O2 sensor is tricky because the O2 sensor reading oscillates in a small range between 0 and 1 volt in closed loop operation. Maybe your DVM has a mode that makes it easy to decipher such a reading.

I have done that, I was just wondering because I saw a lot of post in which people were reading the vdc from the actual connector and I was just curious how they did it thats all.

It's very simple.
They teach you in " Engine Electronics 101 ", NEVER pierce a wire, instead insert a safety pin beside the wire you want to probe, right at the connector.
That way, you will get a good connection, without piercing the insulation, which may cause a corrosion problem later.

I don't think you can backprobe O2 connector. This is a homemade adapter I used to check O2 sensors. I used Fluke oscilloscope.
