I notice this sometimes on my old 300e when I push the odo reset button, it gets caught and the grinding noise starts. Also. when this happens, the odometer does not move! meaning the milege on the car is not incrementing. May be this is the problem on your car. Oh the soln ofr me was simply to oush the odo all the way in and that solved it for me.
