e320 fault codes

Does anybody know what codes 36, 38 and 42 mean on a 1995 E320, M104 engine, with a 16 pin diagnostic connector. The codes are from pin 8 on the connector.
Thanks in advance
Gerritt Visser

36-purge system
38- cam/valve solinoid
42- CAN communication fault

As you have been doing test on these circuits/systems, these
codes can be from running eng with these unplugged/testing...

Clear all memories [ not just codes] and start clean...

Is the right control unit installed? Seems strange to have a CAN code on a E320 124 car.

SB,
My lit shows Can serial data line on 104.032 HFM , obd1

The Can element at HFM module calls for 115-125 ohm test reading at module.
I believe this is OBD1 serial data link between modules vs. the later CAN OBD2 systems. [96 up]
Any which way, my lit shows code 42 as Can communication fault between EA,DM, and HFM somewhere..[ HHT tester chart does seperate these down to sub codes as to which module is bringing the code up]It also give the test teminal on each module for the spec ohmage of each..

???????

Not near any info but I didn't think there was any CAN in 124.032 just 034 and 036. Are you sure that info isn't for HFM in 140 chassis.

Is that 104.032 or 140.032. I don't recall any engine numbers not in the form 104.9xx

Let me know what you find at the Office.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to digest it ,and then decide on my next move.

Just for interest
The engine number is 1049926209727
The VIN 1240326C267335
It is a 95 E320 W124, made in South Africa.

Can you please recommend a book or a manual were I can find all the codes and test / diagnostic information for my car. I would like to purchase it. I do all my repairs and maintenance myself, because I like to, and his data is invaluable. I can take the car to a MB garage, for the first time in my life, but I'll lose out on all the fun.

MB is South Africa is strange. Their technical department bluntly refuses to give any technical info to the public, although the car is is a 95 model. They refer you to a MB dealer, and that is also of no help if you are in persuit of technical data and guidance.
I suppose I'll be forced to use Startekinfo from the US.
Do they have the data there that I would require ?

Regards
Gerritt

Further info:

Can serial data exchange on 124.032 HFM schematic does show the CAN link connector [X63/1] from therminals L/H on the ECU
N-3/4.
According to the info , this data link is simply a 2 wire parallel interface cable allowing data transfer/communication between the modules [ N4/1, N59, N3/4 and N4/3]
This is early CAN networking for OBD1 .
If you are having a CAN code 42, you may want to look at this X63/1 connector for a good connection.

Startekinfo is only available to those with credit cards with US billing addresses from what I understand. Try it and let us know what you find, it will have a full diagnostic manual with code explanations and diagnostic test procedures for all your systems. It may not have wiring diagrams for a 124.

I would clear the codes and work on the first code to come back. I generally ignore CAN codes unless they are in more than one module or are continuous. I also tend to look at the general condition of the battery on CAN codes that are intermittant. The control units quit talking at voltages below 9v and a weak battery might get a moment in the high 8v and still sound like it is starting OK.
