1985 Euro 280sl timing specifications
Greeting Forum Members
I recently purchased a 1985 Euro 280sl, 185,000 miles. No where can I find the timing and dwell settings foe this engine. I have the Mercedes M110 shop manual but it doesn't list the tune up specifications for this engine or distrubitor. The valve cover label is only partially there and the label on the side of the head is completsly worn away. I don't know what information was on that. I currently have the engine timed to TDC @ idle(750 rpm) vacuum to distributor attached, giving me a dwell reading of 15 degrees. The engine starts right up, idles and runs smooth but I've twice failed Massachusettes emissions testing with higher than allowed CO and HC. I need the baseline of a correct timing and dwell setting to work from in order to know what to do to pass emissions inspection. I have the original import and EPA emissions compliance exemption documents for the car but they mean nothing to the testing garages in Massachusettes. The engine is a M110 990 The distributor is a Bosch 0237306045 I need help. thanks, Knarf

I would guess that more timing wouldn't hurt. Thought I might throw that out to get you to the top again. I imagine I have a spec at work.
BTW, of what interest is dwell on that ignition?
