Better when cold

Hello all.

My 190E 2.3 (8v, cat, 1992) seems to run slightly better (more power) when cold, and it suffers from some lazyness as it heats up (not to talk when the fan comes in, it steals a sensible amount of power to the engine until it cuts off again).
I have noticed that the small air temp. sensor located in the front of the airbox is loose, can it have some influence? (perhaps it is sucking some hot air from the engine at that point and so reading a higher temperature than the real air coming from the front, thus leading to an slightly incorrect mixture correction). Does this sound sensible to you?

Or is this the normal behaviour of the car and I am becoming paranoid?

Thanks!
