I have heard that the video/computer gaming industry is likely to surpass the motion picture industry soon in terms of revenues and profits.

I believe it.

My Xbox360 even has HD widescreen movie rentals I can download. I can watch streaming movies via Netflix with it too.

The last video game I played WAS Asteroid. I'm not much of a game player. I guess that these game consoles really are just limited-function computers, aren't they?

In some cases it already has...

"....through the sales of major systems and games such as, Grand Theft Auto IV, which took in over USD$500 million in sales during its opening week.[4] The game's income was more than the opening weekend of Spider-Man 3 and the original title holder for a video game Halo 3."

In at least one respect though we've gone backwards...... When I first started buying PC games they would come in a beautiful 1 foot box and you would get a very detailed manual that was as thick as a brick, even if the game was relatively simple (For example Civilization 2)

Today you get a little plastic box with a one page pamphlet that explains the controls and that's it....

I guess they wanted to create a whole new industry for the game manual writers . . .

IMHO, most of the new stuff lacks substance. The 8 and 16 bit era were the best for me. Limited in some ways graphically, but enough horsepower to carry across some powerful experiences. Stories and strategy do it for me.

I feel like a geezer when I talk to my kids. Half the time I don't even know what they're talking about.

You shouldn't be feeling like a geezer. The time for you to feel like a geezer is when you talk to the kids and you don't know what you're talking about.

I wouldn't say "limited-function" so much as "specialized function". Your typical game system could run a normal computer operating system just fine. They just happen to be running the OS designed for them....and the system hardware is highly focused at graphics and audio output instead of "general" computing.

The computing engine inside a PS3 is much much faster than your average PC, but it really is still just a computer.
