Tyre avilabilty for my w108
My 108 is due for its MOT and at least two of the tyres will need replacing. I have been wanting to put alloys on for a while. There is a guy who sells referbed 108 alloys for £60 each. So my question is about availability for tyres for the steel rims and cost, compared to the alloys. I dont really want to do a change just yet but i dont want to regret spending money on tyres that may be taken off in the next 4/6 months.

Not sure what the availability is in the UK , these cars use 14 inch tires (tyres) on both the steel and alloys. If your going for the Alloys you could probably go with a wider tire such as 205/70/14. The important thing is finding a tire that is suitable for the weight of the car. As Ford Granada's used similar sized tires, I think you will have better luck in the UK then we will here in the US.
Nice car by the way.

So are you saying that i can get a wider tyre on the alloys than the steels? I was worried about not being able to get modern tyres for my steels and having to pay a premium for retro-fit.

I think the standard tire size for these cars is 175/14 which may be hard to find (my MGB has wider tires). My W108 has 195/70/14's which are available as S or T rated. In recent years, only smaller cars (fiesta, Citroen AX etc) came with 14 inch tires. You just need to make sure that you buy tires that are suitable for carrying such a large car or else the side walls wont be strong enough.

I switched to 7"x15" steel rims with 25 offset from W126 chassis and I put on 205/65 r15 H rated tires.
feels much better to drive. the major problem is to find 15 inch chrome hubcaps for those rims. me lucky got a set of brand new ones for 180€uro = 300$ you can see them here: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=eVCk0WKoDQA

I've used 205/70R14 tires with the steel rims on my '72 W114 250 sedan without any clearance problems. There is an issue with the W114, and also according to what I've read, with the W108, concerning fatigue cracking at the front unibody frame where the steering box bolts up. Fatter tires may aggravate this problem, so if you decide to go with fatter tires, keep them well inflated, and try to avoid forcing the steering hard against it's limits during parking manuvers.
Happy Motoring, Mark
