Mercedes were an insanely expensive car in NZ in the post WW2 years and as a result were mostly looked after very carefully so it's no surprise that rust is at a minimum.

in OZ finnys have almost no value so many are pretty rough and cheap to buy.
So the Finnys in Oz aren't so rare then? I've only seen one other finny, in the exact same mittlerot colour as mine the whole time i've been in New Zealand. And of course the white donor car which i found just around the corner here!
Id love to come over to the land of oz and see a few finnys for inspiration.
Do you have any spare parts for a finny other than panels Mercmad? Theres a few things i can think of if you or anybody else not too far away has any bits?

Yes i can get pretty much anything you would ever need .I dont have too many parts on hand but i have wrecked 18 of them. these are pics of a mates place where there are piles of dead mercs and i noticed some NOS chrome parts.
if you need bumpers,we bought new ones from a company in Veitnam who gave a really great price. They even made me some for my 1956 220a .

cool, my bumpers are straight but need re-chroming. I wonder if vietnamese bumpers would be cheaper than getting them re done..

This is the first thing on my list mercmad, its the ignition contacts. I removed it from the ignition unit today and noticed the return spring is shot and my donor car doesnt have original ignition you think you might have one of these in working order?

I think i do actually. In fact i may have complete key and lock set up. PM your address And it's yours for the cost of postage.I got the veitnam bumpers because chromeplating ias hard to get done properly here for a reasonable price and bumpers for my W111 coupe were only $1200 as opposed to $6000 for new ones. A few of the wealther Merc guys here just buy new ones through the classic center because of the chrome costs.

I have read on other sites (113, OzBenz, etc) good things about the Vietnam bumpers; they're stainless steel vs chromed, but the average bloke can't tell, and only a real difference when they are side by side.

SGBUMPERSCAR---PRODUCTS

I'd like a set for my 108 that don't have the rubber trim piece, just metal.

I love the picture of the windshield on that car. Safety glass wasn't being used at that point I suppose It looks just like a shattered old-school single-pane window.

Rebuild the kingpins while you have the axle out, of they need it now or even coming up.

Use a proper spring compressor...

Powdercoat the front beam and arms while you have the ass'y stripped...

Cool. So with the Kingpins you mean change out the rubbers? Is there anything else i should change? i might do the oil seal in the steering box too, looks like its leaking a little.

I got a new Drag link rod and steering damper and bearings to go in. Got new tie rod ends too but i think i need left hand thread as well as right hand? The set i got all seem to be right hand thread.
Is there any tricks to setting kingpins back up correctly? looks like they have some sort of adjustable locking system?
