'72 280se Door Caps

My '72 has the cognac interior color and the door caps are shot. I have found some sets that would fit my car but they are not the cognac color.

I am thinking of the following options in no particular order:

1. Get a set in another color and have them dyed. Can they be dyed?

2. Get them custom made, if that is possible.

Anyone else have any ideas.

Thanks.

I have a couple of NOS door caps for 108 I think. Let me check the colors. Send me email if I don't respond within a day or two... I also have a 108 Congac rear seat skin, new, mbtek.

Thanks Scooter, I hope they are cognac.

I think they might be brown actually. But I have a cognac seat skin I'm sure... I'll check when I get home.

I have inventoried my door caps and have what I think are the following:

1087301951 Congac 108 Sedan left rear door cap, new. I am basing this on the part number on the bag and have not verified it to be correct. The door cap looks long to me and I don't have a 108 to compare to so I'm not sure if it's for a SWB or LWB car.

1097201651 Blue According to the part number on the bag, this is a left front door cap from a LWB car. I am skeptical of the part number as I see no reason that a door cap for a front door would have a 109 part number instead of a 108 part number. Good used condition.

1117201551 one brown, one blue. Fintail sedan left front door cap. Good used, possibly new.

1087202551 black 108 sedan left front door cap, probably new.

I don't think you can dye anything to "Cognac" as it is really 2 colors to my eye. Other more solid colors I think you can dye.

Dying them is quick and easy. Get some spray vinyl or leather dye at a car parts store. You should be able to find a color pretty close. Or you can get the dye from World Upholstery. Obviously you want to do it with them off the car.

I would agree that dying is possible but I would argue that the color "Cognac" isn't something you can dye. The reason being that for the Cognac that I am assuming, it's really two colors, as shown in the attached photographs...

Thanks for checking Scooter.

I don't have my W108 right now (at the mechanics getting the injectors cleaned, tested and rubber parts replaced) to give you a length on the rear door cap.

I asked Tom Hanson the same question on the mbca forums. He said cognac is pretty hard if not impossible to get right when dyeing to match. I have found a set of door caps from the UK, but have not contacted the seller to see if they are still for sale. Problem is that they are not cognac but they are in very good condition.

If the door cap in cognac is for the LWB SEL and Napster can't use it I would love to make a deal for it. I do need all four but getting a one LWB cap is a start. I take it that the front door caps are the same size for both a SE and SEL.

If anyone knows of a source for these or a brown upper dash pad Please chime in

thanks

Could one of you with a W108 sedan measure the length of the rear door cap so I know if it's for a SWB or a LWB? The one I have is 36" long.

I re-checked the caps I have yesterday and here's the revised list:

Fintail sedan - left front door cap, one black, one brown, one blue. Condition is good used to almost new.

W108 sedan - left front door cap, one GREEN (YES GREEN) (new) and one black (new)

W108 sedan - left REAR door cap, Cognac, new, not sure if SWB or LWB.

I called home and my daughter measured the cap on my SEL and its 40 inches that would make the 36 inch cap you have for the SWB as the LWB is 4 inches longer than the SWB...damn
