Temp sensor problems

I hope you can help I have a 74 Mercedes 740 SEL gas that if you plug in the temp sensor for the computer it wont start and when I get it to start I can keep it running barely while feathering the throttle. If I disconnect the temp sensor it will run but it runs rich and misfires a little.
