Hello All,
Has anyone retro-fitted a vintage air system into a 1959 220S? Thank you in advance |

I have not retrofitted AC into a classic Mercedes but have installed AC in other classic vehicles. The products sold by Vintage Air in Texas are excellent. You might want to look at their Mark IV evaporator unit which fits under the center of the dash. You may have to custom design and build a compressor mount for your engine. Good Luck. You may also want to contact forum member ROLLGUY for recommendations/resources for AC equipment for classic Mercedes.

I have it in my 39 CE. As noted your issue will be brackets to hold it.

What engine is in this? Air was available in 1961 and if one of those brackets would fit you would be way ahead.
You will also need a new pulley on the crank as the A/C mount were built to extend out just enough to use their own belt. Thus you will need a crank pulley that lines up with the compressor. On the six cylinder engines of the early 60s the compressor mount has several bolts that bolted to the front of the engine and some spacers were required. But the side brace bolted onto the engine where the first exhaust manifold bolt is and the bottom one bolted from the bottom of the compressor to the motor mount on the right side. You might also need a replace the front manifold bolt with a stud long enough to go through the manifold and into the engine with enough left over to attach the top bracket to. Hopefully someone will have some photos of an installed assembly they can post. |
