Hi all,
I'm having some titling issues with my '76 300D. It is an original Georgia car and I have the original title. But since it is pre-1986, the owner before me had it registered as "non-title / title exempt" in GA, issued me a bill of sale, and I registered it in the same way in GA. I have since moved to NY, and I went to the DMV today to get NY plates but was unable to.
The clerk at the NY DMV says that I must have a GA title (not only registration) to be able to get NY plates, or prove transfer of ownership. But the Georgia DMV says that they will not issue a title for non-title vehicles. So it seems the only way forward is to prove transfer of ownership. Currently I have:
- Original title from 1976 with original owner's name (the back is unsigned)
- GA Registration from 1976 to 2001 in the original owner's name
- GA Registration from 2016 - 2017 in the previous owner's name
- Bill of sale from the previous owner
- GA Registration from 2017 - 2022 in my name
It was unregistered for 15 years because the original owner died and the estate sold it to the previous owner. It seems the only way to do this is to get a copy of the death certificate and the estate information and piece things together from 2001 to 2016 somehow. What a mess. I contacted the previous owner to try to get more info on the estate (haven't heard back yet). NY DMV says that I need to have the estate attorney sign the back of the original title over to me. Am I overlooking anything here? Any suggestions to remedy this?
Thanks,
Henry
