240D vs 300d/td

I have a 240d but am thinking of upgrading to a 300d/Td but I don't know what the differences if any are(besides the fact that a 300d/Td comes with an auto transmission and an in-line 6)

The OM617 in the 300 (regardless of Turbo or Naturally Aspirated) will be an inline 5. Not turbo versions could be had with manuals, but good luck finding one. Compression ratios are the same 21:1 and the extra cylinder nets you about 15 extra HP over the 2.4L, 4-cylinder, OM616, if you're looking at a naturally aspirated 300.

The Turbo gets you to around the 120HP mark, give or take a few ponies, and a decent boost in torque.

Mercedes needed to boost the power of the 240d in order to stay competitive. But they could not. Since a six would not fit they went with a five cylinder.

This helped but not much. So a turbo was added. This meant a lot of redesign work inside the engine since it needed oil cooler splashing on the pistons. There are a few other changes as well but not many you can see.

The killer on these is, as always, the turbo. They go bad and are expensive to replace. They are not that hard to install if you know how. But they do cost a bit to replace or rebuild.

The 240d will have a traditional A/C system. The 300d cars all had the Chrysler derived system that is a nightmare to repair and has a very expensive servo to replace after it cracks. And it will unless it has been replaced with a metal one.

Not trying to scare you. Just passing along advice.

Do you think that you can handle the extra power?
