Question on document for W114

Hopefully everyone is well!

I have the Mercedes Shop Manual and it’s pretty good. However I’m in need of a chassis manual. Did Mercedes make a chassis manual and, if so, know where I can get one or at least look at it?

Looking for datum’s and structural info.

Thanks!

Yes, M-B printed a chassis manual for W114/W115. Earlier printings were in one bound volume, and later printings were split between two volumes. Another useful reference is the Spare Parts List. Probably the best place to look for these is on the 'Bay.

Some folks sell a CD-ROM with scans from the books, but I found that they do not have everything in them, and that searching for specific information is not easy. I bought two of those CDs from different sellers and found them to be lacking. Nothing I've seen is better than the actual printed volumes.

Gmog,

Thanks for info! Do you know what type of information is actually in those documents? I was kinda guessing on what would be in there.

The Service Manual covers all the various systems that are part of a specific chassis, except for detailed specifics on the engines. There are sections, or Groups, for brakes, doors, tune-up specs, axles, transmissions, HVAC, etc.

For detailed engine related information there are other volumes. There is a printed volume for OM615, OM616, and NA OM617 diesel engines, for example. They did it this way because those engines were used in a variety of chassis. Printing these books separately was a more efficient way of providing the information with a minimum of duplication.

Yes have that stuff. I might ought to say I’m looking for info on actual chassis. Such as info you would find if you wanted to straighten out the frame or body. Or how the inner an outer rockers should be assembled..

You won't find that in the Service Manual. The closest to it you could come would be the exploded diagrams of all the pieces that make up the body in the Spare Parts List, but there are no procedural descriptions there. You're asking about stuff any good body repair person would know, knowledge that comes from experience.

From my own experience I can say that most of the answers you seek become obvious when you actually go about taking something apart and putting it back together again. My body-related experience is in the realm of vintage VW, though, and not M-B.

You should ask your specific questions in the Bodywork DIY section of this site. Chances are there are other members of this forum who have been there and could possibly give you the direction you need.

The chassis manual is pretty comprehensive. The CD's use flash so you'll need to find a windows XP machine with an old version of IE5 or 6 to make it work.

Try here:

The W116 body manual does have body/unibody dimensions.

It doesnt have anything about replacing sheet metal panels.

search this site and others for restoration blogs.

I have some pictures on my 6.9 resto blog of rocker repairs. I'm just finishing up the passenger side now.

I have both the 116 and 114 factory cd-roms. Only the intro and menu system use flash. All of the documents are in PDF format. There are listed by job number which isn’t helpful if you don’t already know what you are looking for. I look at the first file in a group of like prefix’s to see if it’s the right group. I’ll edit the name to include the document title so I don’t have to look it up next time.

Someone did create an html menu system for at least one chassis but I can’t recall which nor where I found it. It requires the files to be in very specifically named folders and I was to lazy to follow through.

I’ve used Books4cars many times and have sent the questions regarding what I’m looking for.

The CD’s we not that helpful. I found nothing in there concerning body information.

My nerve is getting up there on trying it…
