Once you get into engine swaps, you're opening a new can of worms. You'll be using a mishmash of parts that unless you put together, you might struggle to figure out. I had a Jaguar with a chevy small block conversion, it was a home brew deal, and felt like was not fitted well. Electric fans had to be manually turned on, many of the gauges did not work. There are companies like John's Cars that make kits that will have everything working but I doubt that there is anything for a Mercedes.

I'm not against engine swaps, but be prepared to troubleshoot on another level.

Boy do I understand that

I just finished a Jaguar project like that

I didn't do the swap but I had to go behind the clown that did to fix all their

nonsense

It was a fire hazard when it came to me

I am not generally a fan of swaps and modifications, and that GM engine in a

Jaguar is now the least of my favorite

But after owning a few W124 E320 and several older chassis, I do sometimes

lay awake late at night, wondering what an M104 would be like in a W114

or W108

And I apologize for dragging the conversation in this direction.

I understand the start of this thread is about the best chassis-specific engine

for W108, etc.

I have a 1967 W108 250SE that will start, run, drive & stop. It's on the

waiting list to come into the shop.

Reading all the wisdom & experience in this thread and the like reminds me

how much I want to get that one going

I daily a 52 year old 220d I got for free. My 78 450slc gets beaten on mercilessly for hours on end drifting and has never broken more than a few belts a power steering hose and few guibos since the 4 speed conversion don't have the driveshaft aligned correctly and I never checked. 6 years I've never replaced a fuel system component. Ballast resistors once. I have multiple other cars that are backups in case u have some little issue I don't want to deal with at the moment or use for other things. 80 300d with no back seat and a hitch is my mini pickup. If you have a small tool kit and a brain they aren't unreliable at all. Maybe you stop and tickle something if it's unhappy. Oh yeah a 280se 4.5 that I could drive besides the very sketchy temporary fuel system in the trunk.
