Air Conditioning seals 1975 240d with York Compressor
Hello,
My usual AC shop just retired, and I am trying to recondition my AC system myself. I vacuumed and charged it and it got very cold, but lost freon r134 within a week. It now won't hold a vacuum, and I got a faint beeping on the sniffer when near the high/red line, although the low line is the one that won't hold vacuum. I was surprised that there were no o-rings or washers on the dryer nor on the compressor hose to compressor connections. Is this normal? The compressor fittings looked like they had household PTFE tape that was used, which cannot be correct. I am assuming a previous owner or their mechanic who installed the rebuilt compressor messed something up. Are there supposed to be washers or o rings of some type, and what type should I use? ...this is a one owner dry state car that was immaculately maintained until the owner's daughter took it to a 'specialist' to be recommissioned for him. I've found quite a few corners in other systems that the mechanic cut which I have subsequently put right. Many thanks for any help!! Brian |

Been a while but I think I recall the fittings on top of the big york compressor having these big flat “washer” looking seals. The dryer fittings should definitely have o’rings.
Old york compressors are pretty terrible with r134. If this is a car you’re wanting to keep and drive I would definitely recommend looking to upgrade the compressor and the condenser

Brian,
Perhaps you are missing these cupped copper sealing rings? https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/2291/MBZ_2291_VENTAC_pg2.htm

Thanks everyone!
I thought it was strange there weren't copper washers on the drier as well. For the compressor, it looks like it would use flat washers of some type? Not sure if they would be copper flat washers or rubber/green O-ring type?? Or something else entirely? And Phillytwotank- I was thinking of this. Do you mean using a Sanden instead of the York? I was reading about this somewhere with an adapter plate. I know that my 64hp will be reduced by half when the York compressor kicks in if its anything like other smaller engined cars with that same system. I'd still like to get the system working as well as it can so that I can ensure there are no other problems needing addressed first before I start upgrading and adding other variables. |

I had a sanden on my old W115 300D (or as I liked to call it, 240D AMG 3.0). It works well and the bracket was well made. You'll need to get the hoses re made with new fittings but that's probably a smart thing to do anyway, and you might even pick up a few horses.

I would do a leak test or just start replacing parts. I replaced the entire system part by part. My smaller A/C line that traveled along the fender well was leaking which ultimately led to my York compressor seizing. I replaced with a Sanden, but kept R12.
