heater fan replacement 115 chassis - help needed
Since this forum is for older than 1975 mercedeses and w115 ended in 1976, I hope it is appropriate place to look for help with my 76 240D.
I am going to extract the heater fun from my car. It does not work but rattles extremely loud when car goes above 50 mph. The problem that I do not have a CD for it, and there are too much work there as I understood to apply reverse engineering approach . If someone has a CD for this model and could e-mail me the appropriate pages I would greatly appreciate it ! Sergey -------------- 240D '76 |

I should probably specify that this is about fan on blower motor - one somewere at the fairwall under the dash - one does not need manual to remove heater fan on this model

You will need to remove the following:
Seats Carpet Heat ducts to rear seat Console cover Console, heater, and AC box -- watch this, as the AC flaps, etc only stick through the sides and can fall out when you open the box to get it off. Ditto going back in. Heater core. I've been advised to stop when you get to the heater core and wait until the next day -- you will probably need to wipe some light grease on the bottom of the heater core. Remove it and REMEMBER what you had to do to get it out -- it slides over to the passenger side, I believe, then back. This is why you would wait to remove it until you have a whole day, else you will spend most of the next day trying to get it back in. Unplug fan, remove the three bolts, remove fan. Install new fan, then wrestle the >>>>>>>>>?!! heater core back in. My mechanic charges $1200 for this -- you can guess how long it takes! Incedentally, the heater fan is the FIRST part installed on the car after it is painted.....! Peter

I took a bit different approach than psFred, as I didn't have the manual at the time. I do agree that they must have built the car around the fan, and taking notes and drawing cartoons is a must.
1. Slide seats all the way forward and remove rear screws for center console between the seats. 2. Slide seats all the way back and finish removing the center console. 3. Remove the air screens from the console that holds the radio. Some console mounting screws are behind those screens. 4. Tip out the console enough to unhook the stuff mounted to the console. Be careful if you have AC: you'll have to completely remove that knob. I used file folder labels on all the cables and wires. Then remove that console completely. 5. Pretty straightforward after that as you can now see what you're doing, especially if you've labled the cables and wires. It's a slow job the first time. You win if you don't have extra pieces when you're done. I got lucky and only missed one washer.

Thanks a lot for the replies! I still have some questions, though:
1. Will I need to remove the dashboard to reach the fun? or just central console? 2. That heater box.. Did I get it right that it is not necessary to take off any hoses and to drain any coolant? Is it connected just on rubber hoses and can hang on them when slided over? I already took the central console off one day but could not see the fun from there... |

Sergey,
At least you don't have AC to deal with. Unless you have trained mice, you'll have to remove the core (more correctly the box that the fan is mounted to and also contains the core). Once you get all the air hoses off the box you'll have to disconnect the water hoses inside the engine compartment and pull the core tubes back through the firewall, after loosening the box bracket bolts that go to the dash. I blew out the lines so they wouln't drip. Physically the fan is between the box and the dash. Once the console that contains the radio is out of the way you can see what you have to do. psFred must be fast. It took me two days to do the job, with plenty of German cussing along the way.

Man oh man I feel for you. I just did this last winter on a 108, outside in the freezing cold, it only took about two weeks. Just don't get frustrated and don't put it off till winter. Take lots of notes and label the hell out of everything. Good luck.
