Starter motor woes
Well I finally had to do it. Pull the starter motor out of the 114 and repair or replace it. What a mission. The bottom bolt was ok but the top one is a different story. There was so much a lack of room to move the Allen key.(even considered selling it about then) Perseverance finally paid off and out it come. After dismantling it I decided a new set of brushes was the go. $25 compared with up to $220 for a used unit. Now to reinstall it I worked out that it was easier to drain the transmission and remove the dipstick housing. what a breeze after that, heaps of room nearly. Must be the only car that I know where you have to drain the transmission to change starters. All said and done it was a successful exercise and the car starts every time now and not most of the time. And I am not going to sell it untill next time.

Peter:
Congratulations! That upper bolt is a real pain. Worse, by far, on the 5 cylinder 300D W115, almost enough to make you want to pull the engine to change it! Peter
