Is this O-2 sensor?
I'm off this week, so this is the time I'm really checking out the 450 SEL ('77)
On right rear of engine, what is cylindrical device (chrome color) that sitcks vertically out of motor, withthin wire leading to another mother cable of sorts. I noticed my wire connection was just about frayed off. What is this, what is it's job, and how would bad connection affect performance? thanks! |

Probably the temp sensor for an electric gauge. No O2 sensor til '80 on the 4.5L M117.

Are you sure about that Peter..... that oxy sensor didnt happen until 1980?
My '77 Euro spec 116 has oxygen sensor light socket on instrument panel, but never was hooked up at factory and covered with tape in back...... maybe USA / California spec cars had the sensor?

to: psfred:re: 240dieseldog:
You know, 240 dieseldog's right on the money. I have a euro car refitted for epa specs as well.
What he describes is exactly what i'm describing. Device is spliced into cable section by firewall, and connected with tape. What also fits, and now I know it was done aftermanufacture, is that the device itself is some saled into motor with some sort of adhesive patch epoxy stuff. It's definitely the O-2 sensor. And I will fix connection to back cable which became frayed and cover it withbetter tape, etc., etc. My question: is the O-2 sensor just to give a reading, or does it key-iin anythign else? And what about the hole it ws put into on motor, if the jimmyed-sealant used starts to have some air leak, can this affect anything? Also, from what I understand of original owner's history, he took it first from Germany to California!!!! |

O2 sensor will be in the exhaust, and you will have both a computer and a "buzz valve" also known as a frequency valve (an adapted D-Jet fuel injector) for pressure control on the fuel distributor rather than a simple pressure regulator.
EPA retrofit will include an EGR valve on the 77, i think. Don't know about the oxygen sensor, but I'd bet you have cats under the exhaust manifold. Is this device in the exhaust or attached to the engine proper? Peter

Peter:
The sensor device is in the rear of exhaust manifold, on the right side. It had been epoxied-in. Wire was frayed and holding on by a single strand at splice point, so I've cleaned and crimped it. Waiting for my battery sealer to dry, then I'll power-up. Yeah. Typical retrofit kit. Last week, with Steve's help, I removed the injector serving as add-on frequency valvbe in jigged-up auxiliary fuel return line. The rubber hose end of the injector had cracked, and rather than spend the $$$$for a new EFI injector (which is what was used), I just - with Steve's advice - removed section and clamped-it-off. No fuel problem with that-if anything, pressure is up a bit. |
