By the way, I checked the coil resistence exactly as tomguy described.

Unless there is something about this car I don't know, timing should be set with the vacuum line connected, NOT disconnected! 8BTDC sounds aggressive to me but I may be mistaken there as well. (Read your emissions plate under the hood, if there is one).

Try new points (regardless of how they look, it may surprise you!) and check your dwell angle to make sure it's set properly.

I hate to have to ask, but what is the range of your multimeter? You had it on the 0-10 ohm setting (mine is 0-2) and not the 1K setting, correct?

If your points were that bad, replacement is the only option. You filed them flat, but they are probably not making good contact anymore -- one side has a big hole in it.

New points did wonders for the 280 (same ignition system). Your miss will probably go away.

Check the mechanical advance, too -- I'd bet it is stuck.

Paul: Something just doesn't seem right about that to me, but maybe it's just me! Pretty damn low resistance for sure.

Peter: Speaking of which, did you manage to remove the c-clip and clean yours out as I did? I believe that's a main factor to my massive power increase in midrange!

Tom:

Not yet -- still have a dead volvo in the garage, which limits what I'm willing to do in the way of automotive work.

The c-clip is in the top, right?

Yup - if you can find that thread I did a half-assed 1-min drawing in PSP

Peter
see the previous post. After I cleaned and re gapped the points, set the timing. The miss is gone. The engine is running great. I just do not know how the timing could have gotten so advanced that it was missing. The ignition system has always been strange in this car, I think I just need to pull the triger on a Pertronix and abandon the point set.

Thanks for all the advise

I'd still put a new set of points in it.

Something is fishy with them if they burn that badly in 4000 miles, they are only a logic switch, shouldn't carry much current unless someone has wired around the switchbox and they are operating the coil directly. If that is the case, 4000 miles is about right for life.
