Newbie question on a W111 Coupe on eBay...

Man I wish I found this forum before I bought this eBay car, but it just looked so good and I had been searching for a Silver Coupe for so long. What do you guys think of this eBay coupe, I've done a search and you guys seem to love to critique these listings. Be kind I already bought this car. Thanks in advance!

Looks like a good deal on a really nice, rust-free and very clean 6-cyl coupe! Good luck, you'll probably love it!

The solid body is so key to this model. Most driveline components are shared with the more common S-class sedan, therefore usually mechanical issues are not too difficult to re$olve. Anything coupe-specific (e.g., trim, glass, body panels) will be expensive due to the rarity of the model.

If it runs well, it appears you bought well.

I think you did it right -- paid a fair price (not exhorbitant) for a car that is in remarkably good condition. I think it shows a lot of love and care over the years. You did right to buy one that doesn't need a lot (if anything!). Look over some of the history of this thread and you'll see people spending a LOT of money to bring their cars up to the level yours is already at.

Do stay active on this forum... the expertise and helpfulness of the people on it is amazing and rare.

Enjoy the ride!

Well it looks like the guy did some work on the car, the paint is new and I was wondering about the white steering wheel with the black shifter knob. But I'm just glad the color scheme is original. Thanks for the feedback. You bet I'll be bookmarking this site. I've already read most of the archive.

Welcome to the 111 group

If the actual condition matches the ad photos, for $14k you made an excellent purchase. Next to the cabriolet, I think it is one of the most eye catching cars on the road. Make sure you protect the rust suseptible areas like the trunk spare wheel wells, headlight coves and lower rear catch all area of the front fenders (I fabricated fender well liners, like the modern cars, on mine). You'll find this forum immensely helpful as there are some real experts willing to help you solve minute issues that will certainly arise.

Nice car. If the details concerning mileage and condition are correct you did very well. I'm suprised someone in Europe didn't snap it up. It's amazing that the interior has held up so well to the Arizona sun. Looks like it was redyed red however. I quess the prior owner didn't like the Nardi wheel either. Hopefully the paint job was done correctly. How were they able to move it from Arizona and do all the work to it without putting any miles on it?

Is this your first Mercedes? The low grill with A/C and sunroof is my favorite model-preferably with a manual transmission. I've owned a blue 1969 280SEC for over 20 years. I think silver, black or gray are also classic colors.

I pulled the front fenders, removed the undercoating and treated them with POR 15. The inner fenders underneath also had some rust. These cars (except fo the leather) do like a dry climate. Although I try to avoid driving it when wet, fender liners would provide some added protection. Could you provide some more details on how you made them and how they are working?

Another newbie question, can I add rear seat belts to the back seats? Mine don't come with any. Does have, thankfully, 3 point belts in the front.

Nortbx,
Yes, you can add rear seat seat belts. If you lift and pull out the rear seat you will see the anchor points. In fact, I'll bet that the seat belts are already installed and to get them out of the way for appearance sake, the previous owner tucked them under the rear seat!

Q45Denver,
With regard to the front fender wheel well liners, just cut out a cardboard pattern and transfer it to some aluminum sheet. Cut out the sheet, make some screw holes, screw it in place, adding foam to close up any gaps on the side and then undercoat it. Maybe the attached picture will help. If you want a larger/clearer picture, email me and I can email you one without the byte restriction of this forum.

Thanks Gregg, I was thinking some kind of flexible plastic liner-but yours looks more durable.

BTW, I just got done looking at the below coupe on E-bay and it is grossly misrepresented. I can provide more details if interested.

I think he meant "Flachkuler". Which means Low Grill in German.

Still don't have the car, its being shipped, but I did get the build card from mbusa/classic. Got the tip from reading the archive, this place is fantastic! I decoded it using mbspares chart, which by the way was compiled by Frank Mallory, his name comes up quite a few times.

Well everything checks out. The car has the original color combo and options as described. Tracing the history of the car is fun.

BTW, you can email mbusa/classic and they will email you back a jpg of the card. I got mine in about an hour. No need to send a fax of your title to mb in Germany. Just type your vin in.

I'm sure you'll here more from me in the upcoming weeks.
