Because I own one, I pay attention to comments on CD's. I don't recall any specific discussion of a "better" year. The turbos came in about 81 (I think) and do make a difference in performance. As far as I can tell, the 300CD is just a shorter, lower 300D model with two doors. Mostly, I like the look of the car.
My '85 does not leak at all. The rubber around the doors/windows has cracked in places and I'd like to replace it but thats costly. As I'm sure you know, all 300 diesels can leak from a variety of places (trunk, hood drains, sunroof, back window seal) and smart owners keep drains clear and periodically check for water incursion.
