Sounds like an easy fix and I can't think of many more possibilites than what has been mentioned. Probably just need the newer updated breather hose. It is a good cheap place to start. If yours is crusty it could cause all sorts of leaks.

Something like this shouldn't make you think of getting rid of it. Your car must be in pretty good shape for something little like that to scare ya. The only thing that makes getting rid of one of these is if a bomb explodes in your engine bay. Then you might have some serious problems.
