My friend's failed with no advanced notice. If your willing to take the gamble I hope you have good luck. The Cylender on my 300SD failed without notice as well when I had a key made. As luck would have it a locksmith was there at the time that my ignition failed and he was able to remove the cylender with the key and vicegrips.

Im even considering replacing the cylender on my 1999 S320 just as a precaution.
