When I bought the car, it was in dire need of back brakes. It was all the way down to the metal. I, in my infinet wisdom, tossed a set of pads on to bring it home. I new I needed to have the rotor turned or replaced, I was being stupid about it, I just procrastinated. Yup, I had to jam on the brakes and I heard a bang, then a grinding sound. I slowly drove home about 2 miles and there you have it. I guess the metal backing plate scored it a little deeper than I thought
