that is a way to check timing chain stretch on a chain that does not have a tensioner... MB's DO have tensioners, so there would be no lifting of the links.
the way to check chain stretch on our motors is turn the motor until the timing mark on the cam gear lines up with the tdc mark on the head. then check the position of the crank pulley. the amount it is off, is how much the chain has stretched.
