Harry:

I believe it turns counterclockwise (toward the IP). It will be quite stiff. You will also need to remove it after you take the plug out, too -- or maybe not, depending upon what you are doing. I took it off for something, but cannot remember if ie was the pressure valve seals or the cutoff replacement -- probably cutoff replacement.
