I have a 1997 E300D and for the past two months I have been getting a check engine light and my mechanic tells me the error code he is getting is P1404 which is an EGR error.

The car frequently goes into the limp home mode but if you stop the car and restart it the limp home mode is deactivated most of the time.

When I start the car in the morning to go to work the car seldom goes into the limp home mode but every afternoon it immediately goes into the LHM and once the car is warmed up if I stop and turn it off and restart it all is well most of the time.

My mechanic has removed the intake and cleaned it out, replaced the MAP sensor, all of the rubber tubes that connect to the intake, and replaced the wiring harness connected to the EGR.

None of this has helped. I'm hoping someone else here has run into a similar problem and fixed it sucessfully.

Also, is there a fuse I can pull that will clear the check engine light so I won't have to remove my rear seat and disconnect the battery?
