P1404 EGR Error
I have a 1997 E300D and for the past two months I have been getting a check engine light and my mechanic tells me the error code he is getting is P1404 which is an EGR error.
The car frequently goes into the limp home mode but if you stop the car and restart it the limp home mode is deactivated most of the time. When I start the car in the morning to go to work the car seldom goes into the limp home mode but every afternoon it immediately goes into the LHM and once the car is warmed up if I stop and turn it off and restart it all is well most of the time. My mechanic has removed the intake and cleaned it out, replaced the MAP sensor, all of the rubber tubes that connect to the intake, and replaced the wiring harness connected to the EGR. None of this has helped. I'm hoping someone else here has run into a similar problem and fixed it sucessfully. Also, is there a fuse I can pull that will clear the check engine light so I won't have to remove my rear seat and disconnect the battery? Thanks, Andrew Churchill |

I've not had any personal expirience with this code, so take what I say with a gain of salt.
When you say limp home mode do you mean the trans is locked in 2nd and reverse only or that you lose power? LHM usually is in reference to the trans in which case you should also have trans codes. The EGR and RF's both get gummed up on your engine and require cleaning periodically. Sticky flaps can cause a code. There is also a transducer that operates the EGR valve. On my 606.962 (turbo) it is mounted on the firewall adjacent to the EGR. It may be the problem. Not certain if your engine has a second identical transducer that controls the resonance flaps or not. If so, the two can be swapped and you can determine if a) code disappears or b) a new code pops up for the RF's indicating the swapped transducer is bad.

Andrew,
I went through all of the EGR, Resonance Flap issues, and not once did they cause the LHM. I was always able to drive at highway speed, although it would surge like crazy. Sounds like you might have a bad battery or low voltage issue causing the LHM, and also have an EGR problem. Where are you located, maybe someone nearby can clear the codes if they have an OBD scanner. Also, to disconnect the battery there is a small square plastic cover in the pass. footwell, open that cover and you can disconnect the negative ground without removing the seat. YOu might need to have the intake manifold off again and test the 2 resonance flaps. See image below

P1404 EGR Error
TMAllison: It doesn't lock into 2nd gear but when you step on it it will only go up to 4000 RPM and it won't shift gears if the throttle is more than 3/4 depressed.
It will hold highway speeds but it slows down dramatically on hills. My mechanic has cleaned the EGR valve and Resonance Flaps. The MAP sensor has also been replaced. I'll ask my mechanic about the second transducer. e300D 97: It doesn't look like my battery is bad as on one occasion I had to turn the engine over for about 30 seconds before the engine started and the RPMs stayed constant during the time it was turning over. I can tell if I've got full power or not by putting the car on cruise control. If I have full power the engine will drop 50 RPM and then pick back up again every 5 or 6 seconds. When I go up hills the surging stops or if I'm in the LHM there is no surging. Thanks for the tip about the battery disconnect. Thank you both for your thoughts. Andrew Churchill |

"Limp Home Mode" is a condition designed to protect the trans from damage when a trans fault is registered. What you are expiriencing is a "loss of power" at higher rpm's.
Do the transducer test E300D97 provided, make certain the EGR & RF's arent sticking and confirm the new MAF is working; would not be the first time one didnt work out of the box. Batt voltage should be checked wiht a multi meter, not by feeling. For fun and a general idea you can review Voltage on your CCU. Press and hold rest for 5 secs, use L or R Auto button and toggle to screen 24. Press rest to exit. You might try driving around with the voltage displayed and note if any voltage discrepancies occur during the next loss of power event.

P1404 EGR Error
Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I'll pass this along to my mechanic and have him check the things you mentioned.
As for the battery disconnect that should be located on the passenger kick panel area I looked but I didn't see anything like what was mentioned. The only thing I saw was the heater vent. Do I have to remove the kick panel to find the battery disconnect? |
